Hiroyasu Sato has been interested in eastern thought, Japanese culture and also traditional culture in abroad since his young age. Ha has visited many museums, shrines and temples and asked himself what he really wants to shoot. While he’s exploring the answer for his life, something invisible that he can’t explain exactly what it is came back to his mind. He wondered if it was something from his old memories or it was just good common old sights of Japan. But gradually, he thought it was a lapse in his memory. Since then, he has started to think what the true aspect of a thing is. Even though the scenery or the phenomenon is the same, people don’t see them in exactly the same way. That’s why it causes conflicts and differences. What you see now isn’t always the truth of things. You can’t express them rightly just from the visible surface. Also the ways of appearances or expressions are changed by the people and the time. If you keep this idea in your mind, you can be sound and calm. Sato has been trying to express the invisible feelings in the object from the various angles.

若い頃から東洋思想、日本文化、海外の伝統・文化に興味を持ち、国内外の美術館や博物館、神社仏閣に通い、自分が撮りたいものは何かと問い続けてきた。そうした模索の中で、ある日、風景の中に目に見えないものがフラッシュバックのように蘇った。それは昔の思い出や懐かしい日本の風物詩だったが、徐々に自分の記憶違いを気づかせてくれる映像も含まれるようになった。そのときから私は物事の真の姿とは何だろうと考え始めた。人は同じ現象や風景でもまったく同じようには見ていない。争いや食い違いもそこに起因している。物事の真実は見えている姿だけでは表現できないと同時に、人によって時代によってその姿は変わる。そのことを心に留めていれば人は平穏でいられるのではないか。そのために私は、私に見えないものをさまざまな角度から表現したい。
